Aces

"I hate pocket aces! they never hold up!", is a statement often heard from the lips of poker players, although statistics prove otherwise. This is especially true in the low-limit $4-8 Texas Hold'em game that I usually play. Last night, I luckily drew this treasured pair of pocket rockets four times. They held up to win three of the four times because the board helped them. In low-limit, no-fold'em games, high pocket pairs almost always need help from the board to win. As newer players, attracted by internet and televised poker games, come to brick and mortar poker rooms, showdowns are the norm. They play much looser and chase many hands to the River. Usually, the bluff is ineffective and the best hand wins the showdown. Having said that, I'll always prefer to see premium high pairs in my starting lineup. The difference in playing these hands today as compared to the past is that we have to sharpen our board and people reading skills. Necessity requires a better read and more attentiion to detail, because it's more difficult to isolate one player and get heads-up. The next time you see aces in your pocket, give them a big hug and pay attention to what your opponents are doing!
