Tres Cuervos (Three Crows)
Like three crows lurking for roadkill, the three rounders perched at the hold'em table last night , attempting to pick the bones of unsuspecting fish. The head crow incessantly chatted like a magpie with its tailfeathers caught in razor wire, as the other two birds heads bobbed up and down in agreement as if God was speaking to them. The assistant crow was nervous and emaciated, as if he had only received the left overs after his rotund boss ate his fill and threw him a few scraps . The third bird was an apprentice crow. He was learning the fine art of the scam from the others. He was taught how to use casino coupons to earn points for food and lodging, to read a racing form, to pick a loose slot machine, to check for coins, left by tourists in the slot tray, and to borrow money, and suck-up to dealers, and to share small gains. In poker he was learning when to fold'em, when to hold'em and when to bet'em. His education would be complete and a rounder diploma awarded, when he could join his unwashed companions on the rail and proudly say that "I don't need to work". The crow's numbers are increasing nowadays. It's time to call animal control to thin this bird's burgeoning overpopulation. At least last night, the carrion at the poker table was alive, and the pickings were slim!!
