Poker Concentration
"Focus-You might not think this has much to do with your poker game, but it does. So many aspects of the game require concentration that you probably won't ever master all of them. Looking for tells, learning your opponents' styles, seeking weakness or strength in another player, giving extra regard to particular hands in certain playing positions, identifying potentially profitable bluffing moves -- all require concentration...Maryann Guberman-poker writer
Joe was nodding off, Tex was reading the racing form, and the young kids in the 9 and 10 seats were chatting about golf, as the Flop hit the board. All were involved in the raised pot. 8s9hJd Flopped. Joe bet, Tex raised, the 9s folded and the 10s and Joe called. The Turn was Kd. Joe bet, Tex raised, 9s folded and Joe called. Heads up on the River turned up a 3d. Joe bet, Tex raised and Joe re-raised with Tex calling. Joe turned up 5d7h and yelled "Shit!" Tex turned over poket kings for a set and won. Joe said "I thought I had two diamonds for a flush in the pocket!"
This scenario, at the poker table at the Oasis casino last night, is one that is often played out in a regular Texas holde'em game. Inattention to even the simplest of details can be costly in poker. Fatigue, lack of concentration, inebriation, inexperience and not focusing on the game, can sharply reduce one's poker stake and winnings. When we don't tune in to the present moment of the hand, a losing session is assured. You can't play your best when you aren't paying attention to tells, bluffs, positions, and other player's play. The next time you catch yourself drifting off at the poker table, cash out and go home. Another game awaits on another day!
