The Showdown
Last night in the 4-8 holde'em game at the Oasis Casino in Mesquite, I was involved in the following hand: I was dealt Ad Kd in the 10s under the gun. I raised, five players called. The Flop was Kh Kc 8d. I bet, two players called, and the 9s raised and I re-raised. Everyone called. The Turn displayed 2h. I bet, two players folded and the 9 seat raised, I reraised, 9s called. The river turned 4c. I bet, 9s raised and I re-raised and he called. At showdown, 9s turned over jd 8h against my trip kings with ace kicker. the 9s's play was very puzzling to me.
I'm known as a very conservative player. When I initiate a bet from UTG, one can assume that I have a strong hand. Of course, I will change up on occasion to represent strength, but obviously this hand was strong. At every juncture of the hand I showed strength by betting or raising, only to be called or re-raised. When the 9s re-raised I figured him for the other king. With the ace, i probably had him outkicked. Worst case,he was holding a king with an 8, 4 or deuce for a full house, but my instincts and his body language told me otherwise. I smelled too much weakness eminating from him. When he showed down his two weak pairs, I was shocked!
Lately, I've seen all kinds of strange hands at showdown. Many of the new players think it's like the World Poker Tour, and they can bluff in low-limit games. I love their "Pioneer Spirit", but more than that, I love to win their money!!
