A Weird Win

Reaching the final table at last night's Oasis Wednesday hold'em tournament was bizarre. With 18 players remaining and my blind coming the very next hand, I found myself with only enough chips to cover the blinds, when the floorman tapped me on the shoulder, and said "You're moving!" Miracle of miracles!! At the new table, I was further from the blinds, so I got to play a few more hands before being blinded out. With all-in moves I won the next five hands and went from almost out, to second chip lead. One by one eight players were eliminated and I reached the final table and the money. Not only was I in the finals, I eventually won the tournament! A little luck and aggression paid off! Especially during the heads up play with two of us remaining.

I sensed timidity in my opponent and took advantage of his willingness to fold too many hands when heads up. In position I raised with marginal hands and adjusted my play to a much more aggressive style. The winning and final hand, I went all-in with ten- deuce offsuit and was called with Ace- Queen offsuit. When my opponent turned over his cards I swallowed my Adam's apple. I knew I was sunk, but jokingly said " No sweat, My Brunson hand's gonna win this!" (Referring to Doyle Brunson's World Series win with ten-deuce offsuit). I had a final miracle. The board came ace, three, four, five, blank, giving me a wheel and the win. I'd bluffed once too often, got caught and still won. I was so far behind the chip leader at the start of the heads up match that I had to make my luck, so I did. Today, I'm laughing all the way to the bank. Poker is a bizarre and amusing game!
