What Are The Odds?
The waning full moon must have influenced the cards that I received last night in the 4-8 hold'em game at the Oasis casino. In the span of an hour I wound up with four-of- a- kind three times and two other players were dealt four-of-a-kind hands.
During my first ten minutes of play, I was dealt pocket threes and then flopped a three and then rivered the fourth one. One player gave me good action all the way through the River and I took down a nice pot.
Several hands later, I looked down to see pocket Jd Jh as my hole cards. The Flop showed Js Jh Qd, giving me quads again. One player bet, another called and I just called. the Turn was Qc, showing two pair on the board. Two players checked and I bet, with one folding and the other re-raising. I just smooth-called. A rag hit the River and I raised the remaining opponents bet and he called. I turned over my quads and he mucked. Everybody at the table gasped, as he would've won the bad beat jackpot if his hand was a full house. It was about $$1500 to the loser, $700 to the winner (me), and $110 to each player at the table. He wouldn't tell what he mucked, but I suspect he was too embarrased to reveal that he just threw away a bunch of money.
Four hands later, pocket threes showed up in my hand. Once again two more flopped, giving me quads for the third time. This hand also continued through the River and I won a nice pot. In the next few minutes quad nines and quad queens appeared in two different players hands and they also had plenty of action and won nice pots.
I wonder what the odds are of quads appearing five times in an hour during a Texas hold'em game? Also, what are the odds of one player getting quads three times in less than and hour? Furthermore, what are the odds that one player will be dealt quad threes twice in less than an hour. This is an excellent problem for the poker mathematicians and statisticians to calculate. It's beyond my ability to figure out. It sure was fun getting all of those good hands!
